Born in Kassel in 1969, he initially trained as a machine fitter and worked in railway operations before transitioning into trade union work. He served as a union secretary and managing director for the DGB in Central Hesse for many years. A member of the SPD since 2005, he has also served as a member of the Gießen district council since 2011.
