Mike Gabbard is an American politician serving as a member of the Hawaii Senate for District 21. Born in American Samoa, he is the first person of Samoan descent to serve in the Hawaii Senate. Initially a Republican, he switched to the Democratic Party in 2007. Throughout his career, he has been a prominent advocate for environmental legislation, including bans on certain sunscreens and the declaration of a climate emergency in Hawaii. While he was previously known for his activism against same-sex marriage, he has since evolved on the issue and apologized for his past opposition. Before entering politics, he worked as an educator and administrator in American Samoa and Hawaii.
