Mustafa Dzhemilev is a prominent Ukrainian politician, human rights activist, and a key leader of the Crimean Tatar national movement. Born in 1943, he spent fifteen years in Soviet prisons and exile due to his dissident activities and advocacy for the rights of the Crimean Tatar people. Following Ukraine's independence, he served as the chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People from 1991 to 2013 and has been a long-standing Member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine since 1998. A vocal opponent of the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea, he remains a steadfast advocate for Ukraine's territorial integrity and the rights of indigenous peoples.
