Philip Heath Mendelson is an American politician currently serving as the Chairman of the Council of the District of Columbia. First elected to the Council in 1998 as an at-large member, he assumed his current leadership role in 2012. Throughout his career, Mendelson has focused on legislative oversight, regulatory reform, and urban policy, including significant work on gun control, same-sex marriage legalization, and budget autonomy for the District.
