Previously a long-time member of the Rashtriya Janata Dal and a close associate of Lalu Yadav, he transitioned to the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014. He served multiple terms in the Lok Sabha and held the position of Union Minister of State for Rural Development from 2016 to 2019.
