Previously, he served as the Minister of Social Welfare in the Nitish Kumar government and held the position of Chief Whip for his party. Before entering politics, he worked in the medical profession after completing his MBBS and M.D. degrees. His political career began at the local level as the head of Balesra Panchayat, eventually leading to multiple consecutive terms in the state legislature.
