Sohei Nihi is a Japanese politician and lawyer currently serving as a member of the House of Councillors for the Japanese Communist Party. Born in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, he graduated from the University of Tokyo and practiced law before entering national politics. Throughout his career, he has been a vocal advocate for civil rights, including the introduction of selective separate surnames for married couples and opposition to conspiracy legislation. He has served three terms in the House of Councillors, having been elected in 2004, 2013, and 2022. Nihi is also known for his involvement in legal activism, including litigation related to the Ariake Sea.
