Steve D. Lanier is an American politician currently serving as a member of the New Mexico Senate for the 2nd district, representing parts of San Juan County. Born in 1966 in Aztec, New Mexico, he spent 28 years as a history and computer science teacher at Aztec High School before entering the legislature in 2025. During his tenure, he has served on the Senate Finance Committee and sponsored legislation regarding voter ID requirements and criminal penalties for swatting. In 2025, he launched a campaign for governor of New Mexico but withdrew from the race in early 2026 due to a paperwork filing error.
