Before his appointment to the governorship in 2023, he had a distinguished legal career, serving as a judge of the Supreme Court of India from 2017 to 2023 and previously as a judge of the Karnataka High Court. During his tenure on the Supreme Court, he was a member of several high-profile benches, including those that delivered the 2019 Ayodhya dispute verdict and the 2017 Triple Talaq judgment.
