Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is the Emir of Qatar, the head of state, who acceded to the throne on 25 June 2013 after his father, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, abdicated in his favour. Born in 1980, he had previously served as heir apparent and deputy commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
