She assumed office on January 10, 2017, after winning the 2016 general election, where she defeated Democratic challenger Ken Esquibel with 60% of the vote. Prior to her legislative career, Nethercott established herself as a practicing attorney based in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She continues to balance her legal practice with her responsibilities as a state senator.
