Thomas Nitzsche

Thomas Nitzsche is a German politician and the current Mayor of Jena, having assumed office on July 1, 2018. A member of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), he previously served as a member of the Jena City Council and held various committee leadership roles. Nitzsche holds a doctorate in political science and worked as a specialist consultant at the Thuringian University and State Library before his election. He gained national attention during the COVID-19 pandemic for being the first mayor in Germany to implement a mandatory mask policy in his city.
