Thomas Spies is a German politician and physician who has served as the Mayor of the university city of Marburg since 2015. A member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), he previously served as a member of the Hessian State Parliament from 1999 to 2015, where he held the position of deputy parliamentary group leader. His political work has focused heavily on healthcare policy, including the development of the 'solidary citizens' insurance' model, as well as science, culture, and demographic change. In 2021, he was awarded the Göttingen Peace Prize for his commitment to refugees.
