Valerie Amos, Baroness Amos is a British politician, diplomat, and academic who currently serves as a member of the House of Lords. A life peer since 1997, she has held numerous high-profile roles, including Secretary of State for International Development and Leader of the House of Lords. She made history as the first Black woman to serve as a UK Cabinet minister and later as the first Black woman to lead a UK university during her tenure as Director of SOAS, University of London. From 2010 to 2015, she served as the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. Since 2020, she has served as the Master of University College, Oxford, becoming the first Black head of an Oxford college.
