Akira Ohtani is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Hitachinaka in Ibaraki Prefecture. Born in 1973, he graduated from Chuo University and worked in the advertising industry before joining the Matsushita Institute of Government and Management. He began his political career as a member of the Ibaraki Prefectural Assembly in 2010. After an unsuccessful bid for mayor in 2014, he was first elected as Mayor of Hitachinaka in 2018 and subsequently re-elected in 2022. Throughout his mayoral tenure, he has maintained a neutral stance regarding the restart of the Tokai No. 2 nuclear power plant.
