Iwao Atsumi is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Higashimatsushima in Miyagi Prefecture. Born in 1947 in what is now Higashimatsushima, he began his career as a local government official in the former town of Yamoto, where he served in roles including director of the school lunch center and secretary-general of the town assembly. He later served six terms as a member of the Miyagi Prefectural Assembly, where he was affiliated with the Liberal Democratic Party. In 2017, he was elected Mayor of Higashimatsushima and has since secured re-election, most recently winning a third term in 2025.
