A member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), he previously served as a member of the Landtag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern from 2002 to 2021, where he held roles including parliamentary group manager and chairman of the committee for economics, labor, and tourism. Before his full-time political career, he worked as a lawyer. He also served as a member of the Rostock city council from 1997 to 2009.
