Kenichi Yoshizumi is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Shinjuku, a position he has held since 2014. Born in Shinjuku, he graduated from Nihon University and began his career as a secretary to politician Kaoru Yosano. He served as a member of the Shinjuku Ward Assembly and the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly before being elected mayor. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he gained national attention for his proactive approach to testing and his vocal opposition to proposed punitive measures against infected individuals, which he argued would unfairly stigmatize citizens.
