Makiko Saito is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Hanyu City in Saitama Prefecture. Born in Hanyu, she is a qualified judo therapist who previously worked in medical facilities in Tokyo. After returning to her hometown, she became involved in local non-profit work and co-founded the local political group Hanyu Citizen Network. In 2019, she was elected to the Hanyu City Council, becoming the first female member in 16 years. She holds a master's degree from the Meiji University Graduate School of Governance and was elected mayor in May 2026, campaigning on a platform of reform and improved civic engagement.
