Makiko Yonemaru is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Aira City in Kagoshima Prefecture, having assumed office in April 2026. She made history as the first female head of a municipality in Kagoshima. Before her election as mayor, she served two terms as a member of the Kagoshima Prefectural Assembly and worked in the private sector, including roles in brand consulting and family-run funeral and travel businesses. She holds an MBA from Brighton Business School. Inspired by Margaret Thatcher to pursue a career in politics, she has focused her platform on community development and generational change.
