Mariko Ando is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Tsuchiura in Ibaraki Prefecture. Born in Tsuchiura, she began her career in the private sector, working for Nissan Motor and later in the secretarial office of Daikyo, before establishing her own care service company. She entered politics as a member of the Tsuchiura City Council and subsequently served two terms in the Ibaraki Prefectural Assembly. In 2019, she was elected Mayor of Tsuchiura and was re-elected to a second term in 2023. During her tenure, she has focused on local governance and fiscal responsibility, including implementing salary reductions for city officials to fund COVID-19 countermeasures.
