Kazumi Matsui
Profile
Kazumi Matsui is a Japanese politician and former bureaucrat currently serving as the Mayor of Hiroshima, a position he has held since 2011. A second-generation atomic bomb survivor, he previously worked for the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Throughout his tenure, Matsui has focused on nuclear disarmament and peace initiatives, including the continuation of the Mayors for Peace program. He has also overseen various municipal reforms, introduced a partnership oath system for same-sex couples, and served as the 31st Chairman of the National Mayors Association. His administration has occasionally faced controversy regarding his comments on historical education materials and his policies concerning the invitation of foreign representatives to the annual Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony.
