Michitaro Watanabe is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Nasushiobara City in Tochigi Prefecture. Born in Tokyo, he graduated from Keio University and previously worked as a company employee and a secretary to his uncle, Yoshimi Watanabe. He began his political career in 2013 when he was elected to the House of Councillors as a member of the Your Party. During his tenure in the Diet, he served as a Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Finance. In 2019, he resigned from his seat in the House of Councillors to successfully run for mayor. Watanabe supports constitutional reform, including the revision of Article 9, and advocates for the exercise of the right to collective self-defense.
