Tsugumasa Muraoka

Profile

Tsugumasa Muraoka is the Governor of Yamaguchi Prefecture, currently serving his fourth term. A former bureaucrat, he joined the Ministry of Home Affairs (now the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications) in 1996 after graduating from the University of Tokyo. During his career in the central government, he gained experience in local administration through postings in Hokkaido, Kochi Prefecture, and Hiroshima City. Muraoka was first elected as Governor of Yamaguchi in 2014 and has since focused his administration on economic revitalization, population decline countermeasures, and child-rearing support. He is known for his emphasis on regional development and has maintained a close political relationship with the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who represented the Yamaguchi constituency. His policy platform includes promoting digital transformation in education and infrastructure, as well as navigating complex issues such as energy policy and base-related matters within the prefecture.
