Masatoshi Murei is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Ako in Hyogo Prefecture. Born in 1954 in Sakoshi, Ako, he graduated from the Faculty of Law at Osaka University. Before entering politics, he had a long career as a civil servant in the Hyogo Prefectural Government, holding positions such as administrative director at the University of Hyogo's Harima Science Garden City campus. After an unsuccessful bid in 2015, he was first elected mayor in 2019 and secured a second term in 2023 after running unopposed. During his tenure, he has focused on local administrative management, including implementing fiscal measures such as reducing the bonuses of special public officials to fund COVID-19 countermeasures.
