Previously, he served as the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs and Youth Affairs and Sports from 2021 to 2024, and represented the Cooch Behar constituency in the Lok Sabha. A former member of the Trinamool Congress, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019 and has since become a key figure in strengthening the party's organizational presence in North Bengal.
