A member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), he previously served as a member of the Bamberg City Council starting in 2014, where he held roles such as deputy parliamentary group leader. Before his political career, Niedermaier worked as a master gardener and co-founded a family-run organic nursery in 2012. He is also active as a tourism ambassador for the region.
