Shuhei Kato is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Minamiashigara in Kanagawa Prefecture, a position he has held since 2011. Before entering politics, he had a long career as a municipal official in Minamiashigara, where he served in various roles including head of the welfare and health department and secretary general of the city council. During his tenure as mayor, he has focused on local governance and regional cooperation, notably establishing a partnership oath system for same-sex couples in 2021. He was re-elected for a fourth term in 2023.
