Shoko Kawata is a Japanese politician currently serving as the Mayor of Yawata in Kyoto Prefecture. Born in Nara, she graduated from Kyoto University and previously worked as a caseworker for the Kyoto City government before serving as a private secretary to House of Councillors member Akiko Santo. In November 2023, she was elected as the youngest female mayor in Japanese history at the age of 33. Her political platform focuses on child-rearing support, urban development, and securing new financial resources for the city. In 2026, she made history by becoming the first incumbent female head of a local government in Japan to announce the intent to take maternity leave.
