Sugath Thilakaratne

Sugath Thilakaratne is a Sri Lankan politician and former professional sprinter who currently serves as a Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Sports. A celebrated athlete, he specialized in the 400-meter event, winning multiple medals at the Asian Athletics Championships, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games, and represented Sri Lanka at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. Following his retirement from sports in 2008, he held various administrative roles, including President of the Sri Lanka Athletic Association. He is the first Olympic athlete to be elected to the Sri Lankan Parliament, representing the National People's Power party.
