A libertarian-leaning Republican, he earned the nickname "Mr. No" for his frequent opposition to federal spending and interventionist policies. Before his congressional career, Massie was a successful entrepreneur and served as the judge-executive of Lewis County, Kentucky. He holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
