A member of the Labour Party (PvdA), he has held numerous public offices throughout his career, including serving as the mayor of Achtkarspelen, Heerenveen, and acting mayor of Ommen. Before his tenure in municipal government, he worked as a teacher and staff member for anti-racism organizations. In 2023, he was named an honorary citizen of Heerenveen for his long-standing service to the municipality.
