Yoshihiro Murai

Profile

Yoshihiro Murai is the Governor of Miyagi Prefecture, currently serving his sixth consecutive term. A graduate of the National Defense Academy of Japan, he served as a Ground Self-Defense Force officer before entering politics. He was first elected to the Miyagi Prefectural Assembly in 1995 and assumed the governorship in 2005. Throughout his tenure, Murai has been known for promoting neoliberal economic policies, including the 'Fisheries Reconstruction Special Zone' initiative following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the privatization of water infrastructure via the concession system. He also served as the 15th Chairman of the National Governors' Association. His administration has focused on disaster recovery, regional economic revitalization, and the recruitment of foreign labor to address local workforce shortages.
